Chapter 13

Taque had been correct about the Demon patrols wandering the roads. We managed to sneak around all of them along the way, the result of his skills with sneaking and tracking.

Together, he and Rowan made a pretty great team. I, on the other hand, was spending my time trying not to show every ounce of nausea I had been feeling since eating that morning.

On top of hiding my pregnancy from Rowan, I was also having to pretend like the symptoms that came with it weren't bothering me. After all, I had my husband back and everything was right in the world once more. He would get pretty suspicious if I showed any signs of it at all. It wasn’t always easy. Sometimes I’d “take a walk for fresh air,” just to throw up.

Taque caught me once and asked me if I was alright. I made him promise not to worry Rowan with it and said I’d become ill from the game he had caught and cooked for lunch. That triggered an argument between us because he was offended. It all worked out in the end, with me promising to act like the next thing he caught was the most delicious thing I’d ever tasted so that he could win the favor of the King. Men and their egos. Rowan, of course, could also taste the food that we ate for dinner, and looked at me like I was insane when I began glorifying the meat.

By the end of the day, I had decided that Taque was actually a lot of fun to be around. We went back and forth for hours, telling jokes and making up elaborate stories until Rowan snapped at us both to be quiet. I knew it was making him jealous and was quick to reassure him that I didn’t mean anything by it other than a way to pass the time.

“On trips that we would take back home in the Mortal Realm, I would play on my phone or listen to music and pretend that I was in a dramatic music video. It always helped the days to go by quicker.”

“I have no idea what this woman is talking about, do you, Sire?” Taque asked, looking at me like I was demented.

“Phones are what mortals use to talk to each other from long distances,” Rowan replied. “Cars are used for travel in place of horses, and, as for the music video, I don’t know what that means any more than you do.”

“Look at you babe, learning the ways of us mere mortals...” I grinned and provided Rowan with a wink. “I’m telling you guys, one day, I will have to bring it to my realm. You are going to love social media. Trust me.”

“Social media…” Taque responded, chewing his lip. “Yes, sounds like fun.”

“Fun and entertaining.” I corrected, glancing at Rowan who was glaring at me again. “Not as fun as spending time with you though, lover.”

“I wouldn’t expect anything to be that fun,” He replied, his lips twitching into a smile.
